The YAEL foundation is dedicated to promoting medical research, education and practice. Our particular focus is on autoimmune and inflammatory liver diseases (i.e. autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC)). We have been providing grants and prices for research projects and organized seminars for patient information. Our main ongoing activity is to support the ‘YAEL Clinic for Autoimmune Liver Diseases’ as part of the ‘Martin Zeitz Centre for Rare Diseases’ located at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf, providing passionate and dedicated patient care and a clinical research infrastructure for autoimmune liver diseases. The YAEL foundation is a non-profit organization acknowledged by the State of Hamburg.
GASL-Award of the YAEL foundation 2017
Dr. Amar Deep Sharma is awarded the YAEL Prize 2017. With the prize the German Association for the Study of the Liver (GASL) honours his publication in Cell Stem Cell “Direct reprogramming of hepatic myofibroblasts into hepatocytes in vivo attenuates liver fibrosis”.
New insights from YAEL research
No evidence that azathioprine increases risk of cholangiocarcinoma in PSC patients (Zenouzi et al., Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology 2016).
Spleen Size can help to predict clinical outcome in patients with PSC (Ehlken et al., Gut 2016).
Transient elastography is a reliable tool to detect liver fibrosis in treated AIH (Hartl et al., Journal of Hepatology 2016).
